Sonopia: Mobile Social Networking with a (1 or 2 Year) Plan
Sonopia is a new service that lets you create your own branded Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), attract subscribers and provide mobile content to your users. Info can be found at MobileCrunch and TechCrunch.
Despite the full-bodied ‘be your own mobile carrier’ slogan, I wouldn’t consider Sonopia to be more than a glorified member-gets-member referral program for Verizon customers. But the important part is IMO: mobile social networking is promoted as a key feature this time. And the fact that it is being sold as a package together with a mobile phone plan shows that people are thinking about ways of monetizing Web 2.0-style services beyond advertising. (And that carriers may benefit from Web 2.0 instead of being reduced to a dumb pipe – if they’re clever that is 😉 )
Will be interesting to see how well their subscriber numbers develop…
